| Abstract: |
Writing music using commercial packages (e.g., Finale) is often difficult because of the lack of a pen-based interface. The use of a keyboard and mouse to draw notes is awkward at best and totally unnatural. A group at Brown University has written a Tablet PC-based music scripting software package called Music Notepad that fills this void. However, Music Notepad music files have a unique format and can neither be imported into commercial packages, nor can it import music scripts produced by other packages. This project extends Music Notepad and enables it to connect with other commercial packages through MusicXML, a common ground for music scripting programs, developed for both commercial and open-source products. We describe how we worked with Music Notepad, studied and understood its internal structure, and developed input/output functions that read and write MusicXML files. We show how our software extension enables movement of music scripts from Music Notepad to other packages.
