Abstract:
This paper presents the development of the Tablet-PC based Labs-to-Go project kit and the results of the first semester of implementation in the Controls and Vibrations Laboratory (MECE 4372) course at the University of Houston’s Mechanical Engineering department. By creating a portable data collection system with a Tablet-PC equipped with LabView, a USB-based data acquisition system, and a PVDF strain gauge/vibration sensor, students are able to collect and analyze vibration field data on objects of their own choice. Integrated into the course’s existing laboratory curriculum, a Labs-to-Go group project was designed to engage students in experiment-based active learning to better convey course concepts and to give students experience in collect and analyzing field data outside of a guided lab environment. Survey data collected from students at the conclusion of the inaugural semester of the Labs-to-Go project indicates strong student support and enthusiasm toward the project and course subject and that the project has greatly enhanced the teaching of course concepts.
