Abstract:
Chemistry instructors are typically faced with large lecture halls full of students, making it difficult for the instructors to know which students are struggling with the course material before the first test. To help such an instructor, we have developed a Tablet PC program called OrganicPad that can be used for high school or entry level college chemistry courses. The instructor initiates a server program and students connect as clients using the http protocol. The instructor can broadcast word problems to students. A help button guides students as they develop their solutions. The instructor can view the student submissions and, at any time, can click on a check solutions button which automatically evaluates the student submissions and mark them correct or incorrect. This provides the instructor with multiple student-generated solutions from which to instruct. Although we have chosen organic chemistry as the first example course for this technology, the same approach can be used in other courses, such as computer science data structures and algorithms. In this poster presentation, we will describe and demonstrate OrganicPad. We also show how we are modifying the program to provide similar capabilities to the computer science data structures instructor.
