Abstract:
A Microsoft Corp. funded project with 3 initial aims was initiated in the Fall of 2006. This project aims to enhance active and collaborative learning among students, to facilitate project workflow by students in collaborative groups addressing needs of underserved populations in the community, and to increase faculty and student confidence in utilizing various new technologies impacting on health care. This poster will present initial results from 3 separate courses in the Fall of 2006 addressing the first aim. This initial introduction focused on the classroom integration of innovative approaches to collaborative and active learning in the classroom through the use of tablet PCs and two different software applications, Classroom Presenter and/or E-Pen & Form Filler. Lessons learned by the principal investigators and faculty in planning, implementing, and assessing the impact of the selected teaching strategies on learning and student socialization will be shared. Initial evaluation results indicate that the majority of students agreed or strongly agreed that their experience in using the tablets PCs promoted active participation and that they were easy to use with minimal directions. Also, students indicated satisfaction with the active learning experience and that exposure to various technologies is important for future nurses.
