Abstract:
Students in a mobile learning environment, making use of the Tablet PC, will show positive impact on student attitudes, improve classroom dynamics and enhance the efficiency of the teacher and lighten their workload. The course begins with only the instructor using a Tablet PC for presentation and electronic grading. At the sixth week each graduate student will be given exclusive use of a convertible Tablet PC. In the 12th week the students will be allowed to return to the methodology of the first 6 weeks or stay with the use of the Tablet. DyKnow Vision and Monitor will be used to communicate the second part of the course and to allow collaboration among team members. While many studies of deployments of Tablet PCs have begun to emerge especially as reported in Berque and Prey [7] there are none in econometrics and statistics especially at the graduate level (however, see Dixon [8]). Problem based learning strategies are appropriate for the teaching of econometrics and the use of the Tablet PC in mobile learning environments further enhance the value of this pedagogy to cause students to think critically and learn to perform in authentic tasks.
