| Abstract: | DePauw University offers dozens of courses each semester using pen-based technology. Students and teachers in these courses use patented DyKnow software to support collaborative note-taking; interactive activities such as student problem submission; and after class note review and replay. This paper leverages our broad deployment to more fully examine the use of Tablet PCs and DyKnow tools to support collaborative problem solving during class. Using our approach, the teacher transmits a problem to each student's Tablet PC. Students then work in small groups to solve the problem. Finally, group solutions are shared to promote discussion. After setting the context for our approach this paper describes the specific course redesign activities that were undertaken with support from a Hewlett-Packard Technology for Teaching grant. Highlights from a mixed-method evaluation that combines a formal controlled laboratory study with an ecologically valid classroom evaluation are presented. Metrics include student attitude surveys, focus groups, instructor experiences, and comparative scores on group problems that were solved with the support of DyKnow software and Tablet PCs as compared to problems that were solved using a low technology approach. |
